Heavyweight Art Installation is a Montreal-based collective consisting of painter Gene Starship, graphic designer Tyler Gibney and artist Dan Buller. In 1999, Heavyweight began production of a series of paintings on 6 x 6 ft, canvases at live club and music environments. Working simultaneously on a single canvas, the three artists derive inspiration from the music, people and atmosphere of each event. Occasionally, relevant historical or iconographic figures are incorporated into the compositions from the group’s file of collected photographic, illustrated, and graphic source materials – a visual equivalent of the music technique of "sampling". The end result is highly resolved compositions that blend each artist’s style and their intuitive influences of graffiti, graphic design, calligraphic line work and illustration.
