Heavyweight Art Installation is a Montreal-based collective consisting of painter Gene Starship, graphic designer Tyler Gibney and graffiti artist Dan Buller. In 1999, Heavyweight began production of a series of paintings on 6 x 6 ft, canvases at live club and music environments. Working simultaneously on a single canvas, the three artists derive inspiration from the music, people and atmosphere of each event. Occasionally, relevant historical or iconographic figures are incorporated into the compositions from the groups file of collected photographic, illustrated, and graphic source materials a visual equivalent of the music technique of "sampling". The end result is highly resolved compositions that blend each artists style and their intuitive influences of graffiti, graphic design, calligraphic line work and illustration.
During the summer of 1999, Heavyweight was invited to create paintings on a six week north American tour with Ninja Tune (UK) artists: The Herbaliser and Roots Manuva. Heavyweight also performed at such major events as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California, The CMJ/Giant Step Music Festival in New York and the Montreal Jazz Festival, accompanying such acts as Carl Craig and the Innerzone Orchestra, Amon Tobin, Spacetime Continuum, Luke Vibert, Thievery Corporation, Kool Keith, Joe Claussell, Kid Koala and Frederic Galliano. Heavyweight was also present at the Masters at Work 10th anniversary show at the winter music conference in Miami last March.
Recent press articles on Heavyweight Art Installation have appeared in CMJ New Music Monthly, XLR8R Magazine, Paper Magazine, Details, and The Fader. Upcoming article in Azure Magazine.
